For four long years
I wasn’t a man
dreaming chained
with the lights on
in another world
a netherworld
four long years
with nothing
to say
thoughts impure
at Guantanamo Bay
now I’m learning
to walk
without chains
I’m learning
to walk
without chains
learning to walk
without chains
without chains
without chains
born in bremen
played guitar
a young apprentice
building ships
loved and married
heard the call
is attaining wisdom
a pursuit of fools
journeyed to Pakistan
to breathe the Koran
taken in custody
no reason why
then a prison camp
as an enemy
Combatant
(Chorus)
Languished in a cell
Four years and a day
Then flown home
A version of free
Chained to the floor
With eyes bound
One last humiliation
left to endure
they say I walk
strange
that may be so
its been a long time
since I walked at all
now I’m learning
to walk
without chains
to talk
without chains
to breathe
without chains
to love etc…
without chains
without chains
without chains
Every time I see some movie or photos of some old war it always makes me sad. What is impressive is how people are so forgetful. For instance not that long ago UN was saying that it should never again happen on our watch. They were talking about Rwanda that happened 14 years ago. Five years ago the mess in Darfur started. I guess UN will make sure that the next war (5-10 years from now) will also not happen.
Similar thing is happening with other wars. For example Vietnam war started close to 50 years ago. And today, like people would not learn nothing from that war, there are more wars like that raging in the world. When will people learn?
Almost 40 years ago, two young guys John and Paul wrote the following song:
Words are flying out like
endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
are drifting thorough my open mind
Possessing and caressing me
Jai guru deva om
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Images of broken light which
dance before me like a million eyes
That call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a
restless wind inside a letter box
they tumble blindly as
they make their way across the universe
Jai guru deva om
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Sounds of laughter shades of life
are ringing through my open ears
exciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which
shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe
Jai guru deva om
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Jai guru deva
Jai guru deva
Finally, I saw the movie “Across the Universe” and I strongly recommend it to everybody.
Some of you young folks been saying to me
Hey Pops, what you mean What a wonderful world
How about all them wars all over the place
You call them wonderful
And how about hunger and pollution
That aint so wonderful either
Well how about listening to old Pops for a minute
Seems to me, it aint the world that’s so bad
but what we’re doin’ to it
And all I’m saying is
See what a wonderful world
It would be if only we’d give it a chance
Love baby, love
That’s the secret, Yeah
If lots more of us loved each other
We solve lots more problems
And then this world would be better
That’s wha’ ol’ Pops keeps saying
I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom, for me and you
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
I see skies of blue, and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, dark sacred night
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces, of people going by
I see friends shaking hands, sayin’ how do you do?
They’re really sayin’ I love you
I hear babies cryin’, I watch them grow
They’ll learn much more, than I’ll never know
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself, what a wonderful world
Oh yeah
‘So! You take let us assume a third toke; long and slow. You vaporise
and you take it in and in and in… and there is a sound like the
crumpling of a plastic bread wrapper or the crackling of flame and a
tone. A mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
and there is this…….
There is a cheer. The gnomes have learned a new way to say hooray. The walls, such they be, are crawling with geometric hallucinations. Very brightly coloured, very irridescent. Deep sheens and very highly reflective surfaces everything is machine-like and polished and throbbing with energy but that is not what immediately arrests my attention. What arrests my attention is the fact that this space is inhabited. And so like jewelled self dribbling basketballs these things come running forward and what they are doing with this visible language that they create is they are making gifts! They are making gifts for you and they will say …’
